Penguin Refrigeration move to larger premises in Havant

January 24th, 2012

Penguin Refrigeration move to new, larger premises in Havant, Hampshire.

The new facility will allow Penguin to further develop their refrigeration and air conditioning products and services supplied to the marine, superyacht, motorhome and caravan industries.

Penguin Refrigeration PO9 1QY

The new HQ at Unit 2B Alexandria Park, has more than doubled both their office and warehousing/production capacity.  The move did not come a moment too soon as the old warehouse was full to busting with stock, taking more than three articulated lorries to move the bulk of Penguins fridge, freezer and air conditioning products the short distance from their old premises to the new site in South Havant.

Crucially the additional office space will provide Penguin with the opportunity to develop a full design office with aftersales service and support for the increasing sales of their luxury and superyacht ranges. The additional warehousing and workshop space also ensures Penguin continue to maintain high levels of stock for their core marine and vehicle products on which the business is built.

Specifiying Marine Airconditioning for your boat

January 24th, 2012

Two Golden Rules when Specifying Marine Airconditioning

During the recent London Boat Show the Penguin team spent a lot of time discussing best practice when specifying marine airconditioning – below are the two key points to get right.

1. Correct air flow

Retrofitting marine airconditioning inevitably means you will end up sacrificing some of your existing storage and locker space to run the ducting and grill back boxes.  If you want your finished system to work effectively don’t cut corners on this.  The aim is to project the cold, dense air from the airconditioner’s blower up and across the ceiling of the cabin.  So, air distribution grills should be as high up as practically possible, for example positioned at the top of a wardrobe.

Marine Airconditioning air distributionNever try and share your marine airconditioning outlet with an existing heater outlet as these are generally positioned way too low and you will just end up freezing the floor of the cabin and little else.

Given the restrictions in space and the ability to run ducting, especially on smaller yachts, delivery grills are often positioned in the back of saloon seating.  If this is the only available position ensure that the grill is positioned so it does not simply freeze the back of the neck of the person sitting in front of it.  This can often be done by mounting it on an angled plinth to help projct the air up.

Equally important to good air delivery is getting the return air back to the marine airconditioner effectively.  All airconditioning works by dehumidifying the air as well as cooling it.  To do this you must ensure that the air in the cabin is recycled via a clear unobstructed route back to the marine airconditioner.  If a return air grill is fitted it must be large enough to provide sufficient area for efficient operation.  See our guide chart for further details.

2. Ensure Sufficient Cooling Water Flow and that the Pump will Prime Properly

Make sure the flow rate of the pump matches the required water flow of the marine airconditioning unit.  Fit a fine gauze strainer and make sure that this is cleaned as part of your regular maintenace on board.  See the product technical specification on our website or email us for confirmation of sizing and flow rates.

On sailboats particularly, a badly installed pump will cause major problems with your marine airconditioning.  The pumps are not self-priming so must be sited well below the water line and we further recommend that they are fitted as close to the sea water intake and strainer as possible.  Pumps will push the water far easier than they can suck air so the closer you locate the pump to the sea water intake the better.

Again for best practice and to further improve the performance of marine airconditioning we also recommend that you fit a forward facing scoop on the intake.

To summarise, get the basics right, good air flow and a well positioned sea water pump and your marine airconditioning will work efficiently and effectively from day one!

If you would like Penguin to assist you further with any marine airconditioning related questions or provide advice or a quote to supply for your boat please let us know.

Vitrifrigo C47 12 Volt Fridge fitted in the new Hyundai i800 ‘Motorcaravan of the Year 2011′

June 6th, 2011

Congratulations to Wellhouse Leisure, whose new Hyundai i800 motorhome, has just won Motorcaravan of the Year 2011, at the recent Stratford Motorhome Show.

Beating off stiff competition from other leading motorhome manufacturers, including VW and Fiat, the success of the Hyundai was attributed, in no small part, to its innovative, well equipped kitchen, which includes not just the usual sink and hob that you would expect to find on a vehicle of this size, but also an oven and grill.  To accommodate the oven, Wellhouse needed to find a lower height fridge than the standard solutions available.  Turning to Penguin Refrigeration for help, we suggested two 12 volt fridge options – the Vitrifrigo C47 or BRK35.  Looking for maximum volume Wellhouse opted for the larger 47 litre C47, with its easy access pull out drawer and adapted their design to suit.

New VW T5 Conversion from Uberbus using Vitrifrigo C40L Top Loading 12/24 Volt fridge.

March 11th, 2011

Why Fit a Top Loading 12 Volt Fridge
Uberbus specialise in the design and production of bespoke campervan interiors for VW Transporters. When designing the layout for their latest VW T5 conversion they decided to opt for a top loading 12 Volt fridge. For Clough Jones of Uberbus there were two key advantages in using a top opening fridge over a conventional front opening one:
“First, we saw big advantages to our design by accessing the fridge through the top of the work surface. Space is real a premium in a T5 conversion, so moving the fridge from the more traditional under sink position frees up valuable space for food and other storage and the top opening fridge has the added benefit that you can always get to the fridge easily, even when the bed is down.
Second, a top loading fridge is a really secure way to store your chilled food. Unlike a front opening 12 Volt fridge there is no risk of driving off with the door open, or catch undone and distributing the contents of the fridge liberally around the inside of the campervan!
We chose the Vitrifrigo C40L because we believe it will be more efficient than other makes of 12 volt fridge due to its aluminium finned cooling unit. Plus, dimensionally, it fits neatly within the width of work top and to cap it all there even a small ice box in the top to make ice cubes – a real bonus in a top loading fridge.”

More About the 12 Volt Fridge Installation
What Penguin Refrigeration like about this installation, apart from the neat styling and appearance, is the detail of the lid hinging. Using sprung loaded hinges, the Uberbus design neatly holds the fridge lid open and then allows it shut completely flush to the work top when closed. Once the hinges were sourced the installation of the fridge was relatively straight forward, mounted to a flange just under the work top with the Danfoss BD35 12 volt compressor sited immediately below. Ventilation to the compressor and cooling unit was provided by vents in base of the cabinet with the warm air then encouraged to dissipate out behind the work top and through the wardrobe beside. The 12 Volt power is through an 110 amp hour battery charged using a Raw component intelligent charging system, which provides enough power to run the fridge (at a temperature of +4°C), and run all the interior LED lighting, for at least 4 days.
Vitrifrigo 12 volt fridges and freezers are manufactured exclusively by Vitrifrigo in Italy and distributed in the UK by Penguin Refrigeration Ltd. For more details on the Uberbus Conversion visit http://uberbus.co.uk/Uberbus T5

New 12/24 Volt Fridges and Freezers at The Boat and Caravan Show 2011

February 17th, 2011

Vitrifrigo’s new look, silver finish, 12/24 volt fridges will be displayed on the Penguin Refrigeration stand 4031 in Hall 4 of the Boat & Caravan Show 2011 – 21st to 27th Feb at the NEC Birmingham.

Following the positive feedback to the C85i, 90 litre 12 volt fridge, developed for Vantage Motorhomes last year Vitrifrigo have extended their range of silver fronted fridges to include their 39, 42, 51, 62 litre models. The new colour has been well received by Penguin’s existing customers as a far better match for the grey vohringer furniture boards, proving popular in current motorhome and campervan conversions.

The Penguin Refrigeration stand (4031) is located with the campervan and motorhomes in Hall 4. Penguin will be displaying a cross section of the extensive Vitrifrigo 12/24 volt fridge and freezer range with special offers on the most popular 12 volt fridges available during the show. Technical staff will also be on hand to assist in specifying the best 12 volt fridge for your campervan, motorhome or RV. The team are also qualified to answer your technical questions on power consumption, advise on how to set up your installation using solar power, vehicle alternator or hook up or other power charging systems.
